After a long day of wandering through the rooms of IKEA, you’ve probably worked up quite an appetite. The good news is that the Swedish furniture giant also sells some truly tasty vegan fare in its restaurants, bistros, cafés and markets! In an attempt to become more sustainable, the company has committed to making 50% of its restaurant meals and 80% of its packaged food completely vegan. IKEA prices vegan food the same as, if not lower than, its animal-derived counterparts, and promotes that animal-free foods are healthier and more sustainable. It knows that going vegan is the best thing you can do for animals, the planet, and your health.
Here’s the Vegan Food You Can Find at IKEA
Plant Dogs
Your trip to IKEA won’t be complete without a stop at the bistro for a delicious vegan hot dog. While the Veggie Hot Dog is vegetable-based, the Plant Dog has a meat-like texture and a smoky flavour reminiscent of the eatery’s original hot dog but without any animal exploitation. Try the vegan chilli topping made with black turtle beans and soya mince, and order it without the sour cream. Choosing Plant Dogs helps spare the lives of playful and intelligent pigs and cows. And at 95p each, you can enjoy a few without breaking the bank.
Veggie Hot Dogs
IKEA’s veggie hot dogs are made with red lentils, kale, carrots, and onion. They can be topped with pickled red cabbage, gherkins, and crispy onions, and you can choose lingonberry jam, mustard, ketchup, katsu sauce, or all four. These hot dogs can be enjoyed at the bistro.
Plant Balls
IKEA’s plant balls are an upgrade to its iconic meatballs. The company sold over 690,000 plant ball dishes from its UK restaurants in a single year, and it’s no wonder. Made with a combination of pea protein, oats, potatoes, onions, and apples, these balls of juicy goodness will not disappoint. IKEA sells these in its market, too, so you can enjoy them from the comfort of your home.
SLAGVERK (Vegan Chicken Nuggets)
These nuggets of crispy, golden deliciousness are available to buy from the market. They’re sure to bring a smile to your face, since no chicken had to die for them.
Strawberry Soft Ice
Smooth, creamy strawberry soft-serve? IKEA has it! Find this tasty treat in one of the chain’s bistros for just 65p.
Doughnut
IKEA’s ringed sugar doughnut is soft and fluffy and sure to satisfy your sweet tooth after a long day of shopping. Grab one (or two) at one of IKEA’s eateries.
Croissant
For a quick morning bite, opt for a flaky plant-based croissant at one of the cafés, delis, or restaurants. Enjoy it with a portion of sunflower spread and Lingonberry jam.
Vegan Food at IKEA Restaurant
And there’s more. Head to IKEA’s Swedish restaurant for a plate of plant balls served with mash, peas, and lingonberry jam, and ask for them without the cream sauce. At the Belfast locations, you can also choose them doused in Jalfrezi sauce and paired with white rice.
Other vegan items on the restaurant’s menu include penne pasta with a rich tomato and basil sauce, veggie haggis with mashed potatoes, peas, and gravy, falafel with couscous and vegetables (without the aioli), a selection of salads such as Triple Rice, Pasta, and Indian Summer, as well as garlic bread and onion rings. For those early-morning shoppers, grab the breakfast roll with veggie sausages or create your own breakfast with hash browns or potato scones, button mushrooms, baked beans, and toast with Flora spread. Oat milk is available for hot drinks, too.
