‘Bloodied Sheep’ Urge Christmas Shoppers to Ditch Wool
Holiday shoppers in Oxford were met with a surprising sight on Tuesday, 9 December, as a flock of PETA supporters dressed as bruised and bloodied sheep appeared at the city’s popular Christmas market. Bearing signs that read, “Help Me!” and “Wear Vegan!”, the harried herd pleaded with passersby to leave wool out of their wardrobes.
Playful, gentle sheep don’t want to be held down and sliced up any more than a human would, but that’s exactly what happens in shearing sheds. Oxford locals should opt for warm vegan fabrics, such as cosy plant wools, and leave sheep’s wool out of their winter wardrobes.
The Wool Industry Lies
The public tends to view the wool industry through rose-tinted glasses, believing that the fluffy white animals in fields that they coo at from their cars are treated well. But this industry is far from the bucolic image that’s often portrayed.
Punched, Beaten, and Kicked
PETA exposés of wool operations in England and Scotland found routine cruelty to sheep, who were beaten, punched, and kicked by workers. A PETA Asia investigation resulted in the first conviction of a sheep shearer in Scotland for cruelty to animals.
Sheep become depressed if isolated from their flock, and being torn from one another to be sheared is horrific for them. The wool industry also is the meat industry – all sheep used for wool eventually end up at the slaughterhouse.
The Amazing Lives of Sheep
Sheep are fascinating animals, and live rich, fulfilling lives when freed from farms. They are social, clever, and form powerful bonds with their flock. They recognise faces and emotions and communicate through bleats and scent.
Humans have no right to use and exploit sheep, or any other animal, for fashion.
