Brussels Moves to Ban Experiments on Cats, Dogs, and Primates!

Thanks to an initiative by State Secretary Bianca Debaets, Belgium’s Brussels-Capital regional government is in the process of adopting a ban on experiments on dogs, cats, and non-human primates that would come into effect on 1 January 2020.

A further reduction in tests is planned for 2025, when safety tests using animals would also be banned, with some exceptions. Furthermore, a 20 per cent reduction in all applied research using animals is also proposed. The decree has yet to undergo a final vote in the regional Parliament, so obstacles may need to be addressed along the way, but this is a great step in the right direction.

Any decision to move towards a future free of experiments on animals is to be applauded. We urge Belgium and all other countries to take this initiative further by continuing the transition to animal-free science and banning all experiments on animals.
