Sadie Frost Joins PETA in Calling On Farfetch to Ban Angora
PETA Pal Pushes Online Retailer at AGM to Stop Selling Fur Stolen From Screaming Rabbits
“Will Farfetch commit to banning the sale of angora on its platform this year?” That’s the question actor Sadie Frost will ask on behalf of PETA US at Farfetch’s annual meeting today. She will point out that, although the retailer banned the sale of fur last year, it inexplicably continues to allow the sale of items containing angora – cruelly obtained rabbit fur.
“As someone who loves fashion and animals, I was thrilled when Farfetch announced it had become a fur-free platform,” says Frost, who previously starred in a “Turn Your Back on Fur” campaign for PETA. “So why is it still allowing the sale of angora – rabbit fur – which is obtained using methods that are every bit as cruel as the production of mink, fox, or chinchilla fur?”
“Every angora item represents the pain and fear of a gentle rabbit whose hair was violently torn out on a farm, which is no different from any other type of fur,” says PETA Director of Corporate Projects Yvonne Taylor. “Sadie and PETA are calling on Farfetch to honor its no-fur pledge by ending its sale of angora.”
PETA’s exposé of angora rabbit farms in China – which is the source of 90% of the world’s angora – revealed that rabbits, who are highly social animals, were isolated in cramped cages and that every three months, they were stretched across a board or hung by their legs while workers ripped their hair out as they screamed in pain and terror. Others are suspended from the ceiling for their fur to be cut or shorn, and their delicate skin is cut open by the sharp tools as they struggle desperately to escape.
PETA (whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”) and Frost note that by banning angora, Farfetch would be adding its name to the list of over 340 brands – including Burberry, Calvin Klein, Gucci, and Selfridges – that have already excluded the material from their ranges.
