Planning a Trip to Japan? Here’s Why You Should Avoid Zao Fox Village
Going to Japan? Steer clear of the Zao Fox Village in Shiroishi.
Watch this new disturbing footage from a PETA Asia investigation into the tourist trap:
In this hellhole, over 100 stressed foxes are packed into close quarters – including many who are confined in – where they’re forced to interact with tourists despite their solitary nature.
Fights, Injuries, and Suffering
The investigation found that foxes were agitated and fighting with each other, a fox was missing their tail, and others reportedly had visible injuries, all of which were almost certainly caused by the high-density confinement and overcrowding.
The Dark Side of ‘Cuddling Experiences’
Zao Fox Village breeds foxes on-site to produce a steady supply of cubs, who are used for paid “cuddling” experiences starting when they’re just 2 months old. A strong odour of ammonia permeated the cages, likely indicating poor sanitation and waste management as well as potentially causing the foxes respiratory and skin issues.
Prevented from Natural Behaviours

Shy foxes belong with their families in their forests and meadow homes, not crammed into tiny cages where they can’t escape the onslaught of tourists and other foxes. We urge anyone who cares about foxes to stay far away from Zao and all other animal-exploiting tourist traps.
In nature, foxes live in small, tightly knit family groups, actively defend their territory from other foxes, and avoid human interaction. At profit-driven animal attractions such as Zao Fox Village, animals experience extreme stress in part because they can’t engage in these natural behaviours.
Stay Away From Animal Exploiting Tourist Traps
Foxes are among many animals exploited for tourists in countries around the world. From cruel horse and camel rides by the Egyptian pyramids to orcas languishing in tanks in marine parks, it is vital to do your research and ensure that you stay away from businesses that exploit animals while on vacation.
Here are some key animal exploitation attractions to avoid while travelling:
