London – Today, PETA’s German affiliate launched its newest racy ad, which features none other than the playboy Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi, who has recently come under criticism for his sexual exploits, is depicted in the ad with the slogan “Too Much Sex Can Be a Bad Thing – for Dogs and Cats Too. There Are So Many Homeless Animals – Please Spay or Neuter Your Animal Companion!” Other celebrities to have appeared in “Too Much Sex” ads by PETA and its affiliates are adult film stars Sasha Grey, Jenna Jameson and Ron Jeremy as well as golfer Tiger Woods, albeit involuntarily in his case, after he publically apologised for multiple extramarital affairs.
“Il Cavaliere can do a great service by encouraging everyone to have their dogs and cats desexed,” says PETA spokesperson Mimi Bekhechi. “The hundreds of thousands of homeless strays in Italy don’t make headlines as Berlusconi does, but they need people to pay attention to the crisis their casual sex is causing.”
Animal overpopulation isn’t an issue only in Italy. A staggering number of stray or abandoned dogs are picked up off UK streets by local authorities – more than 100,000 between 2008 and 2009, which doesn’t include those abandoned at shelters. Thousands of adoptable dogs are killed each year at shelters in England and Wales because there are not enough homes – and part of the blame has to be borne by people who do not spay or neuter their companion animals.
Mr Berlusconi has no formal affiliation with the organisation and has not previewed or endorsed the ad, but the image and the idea were too good to pass up when it comes to helping find homes for animals who will otherwise be left out in the cold, PETA says.
