Pamplona – As Spain gears up for the annual Running of the Bulls, one Fife resident is heading to Pamplona – not to participate in the event, but to protest it. Kat Affleck, 22, plans to lie nearly naked in Pamplona’s main square with approximately 100 other protesters who will wear black and brown bodypaint and form the shape of a bull. Some of the protesters will wear bright red paint to represent the bloody injuries suffered by the “bull”. The eye-catching demonstration is being organised by AnimaNaturalis and supported by PETA and it will be held on July 4, just two days before the Running of the Bulls.

Affleck, who is a lifelong vegetarian and qualified reflexologist, will be available for interviews to discuss the Pamplona protest.

Why is Kat baring all for the bulls in Pamplona? She wants to expose the naked truth about the cruelty of the Running of the Bulls and bullfighting. Prior to the Running of the Bulls, electric prods and sharp sticks are used to rile the bulls into a frenzy. After the event, the animals are tortured and slaughtered in the bullring. During the week-long festival of San Fermin, bullfighting takes place each day. During the fight, banderillas are stabbed into the bull’s back, further weakening the animal through blood loss. The dying animal is finally stabbed to death – or nearly so. Some bulls are still conscious when they are chained by the horns and dragged out of the arena.

Polls show that Spanish opposition to bullfighting is mounting and that the majority of Europeans oppose bullfighting. In 2004, the Barcelona City Council declared Barcelona an anti-bullfighting city, and 40 other Spanish towns – including Torello, Calldetenes and Olot – have followed suit.

“Tormenting and butchering animals for entertainment is something straight out of the Dark Ages”, says Affleck. “I’ll gladly bare my skin if it will expose the cruelty of the Running of the Bulls and bullfighting.”
