Lying on the ground with her nude body painted to resemble a snake and a “blood-filled tear” falling from her eye, The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) star Lauren Goodger appears in a brand-new PETA ad today. The caption reads, “Wearing Exotic Skins Kills. Leave Wildlife Out of Your Wardrobe”. Goodger unveiled the ad – in person – in Covent Garden.

As shown in PETA U.S’s exposé of the exotic-skins trade narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, snakes, alligators and other exotic animals who are killed for their skins suffer immensely. They are commonly nailed to trees, bludgeoned with hammers and skinned alive, and it often takes hours for the animals to die, usually from shock or dehydration. With her new PETA campaign, Goodger hopes to persuade shoppers to cross all exotic-animal clothes, shoes and accessories off their shopping lists and instead stick to mock croc and fake snake.

“When PETA approached me to work with them to help raise awareness about the suffering of snakes and other animals for fashion, I jumped at the chance” says Goodger. “I hadn’t realised how inhumanely these animals are killed for fur, leather, skin etc. so I think it’s really important to raise awareness of this for other people who, like me, don’t realise the true severity of the situation. Every bag, belt, or shoe made from exotic skins comes with a high price – and it’s paid by the animals who are cruelly killed for products no one needs”. She adds, “I urge people to visit the PETA website and watch the horrific undercover footage narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. I know when people see it, they won’t want anything to do with the cruel exotic-skins industry and will join me in keeping wildlife out of their wardrobes”.
