Dublin – Nearly nude vegan PETA supporters Marika Rea and Helaine Murrin sat leisurely in a bubbly bath holding signs reading, “50 Baths = 1 Steak. Clean Your Conscience – Go Vegan”, near the Spire in the run-up to World Water Day, 22 March. The bathing beauties informed passers-by that it takes the water equivalent to 50 baths to produce one steak. The action aims to show both Dubliners and tourists that the best way to fight the worldwide water crisis is to go vegan.

“Not only is the meat industry cruel, it also wastes huge amounts of water and damages the planet”, says bathing beauty Helaine. “You can’t eat meat and be an environmentalist.”

A recent United Nations report found that the meat industry is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global”. Among these environmental problems is freshwater scarcity, and the report calls the livestock sector “a key player in increasing water use” and “probably the largest sectoral source of water pollution”. Also, in addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, eating meat, eggs and dairy products has been linked to heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes and obesity.
