NEARLY NAKED WOMAN’S APPEAL: ‘TRY TO RELATE TO WHO’S ON YOUR PLATE’

PETA Calls On Public to Extend the Holiday Spirit of Kindness to Animals by Leaving Them off Their Plates

Dublin – Lying on a giant Christmas plate – complete with to-scale cutlery, Brussels sprouts, and gravy – a nearly naked PETA supporter turned heads in Dublin this morning with the message “Try to Relate to Who’s on Your Plate. Go Vegan”. The action aimed to encourage passers-by to consider that turkeys feel pain and terror and value their lives, just as humans do – and none wants to end up on our Christmas table.

A photo from the event is available here.

“PETA is encouraging people to extend the holiday spirit of peace and goodwill to all by leaving animals off their plates this Christmas”, says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “Thanks to the array of mock meats available, it’s easier than ever to enjoy a festive meal packed with all the flavour but none of the cruelty.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that although turkeys in the wild can live up to 10 years, those killed for Christmas dinners are normally slaughtered between 12 and 26 weeks of age. The sensitive young birds are hung from metal shackles by their feet and dragged through an electrified bath that can cause them to have full-body tremors. Sometimes, they’re still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re dumped into scalding-hot water to remove their feathers.
