London – Today, on World Vegan Day, a group of nearly nude animal rights activists lay “dead” in the middle of London in a meat industry “crime scene” created by PETA. Activists marked the outlines of fish, pigs, sheep, cows, and chickens and displayed a banner that proclaimed, “Don’t Make Your Plate a Crime Scene: Go Vegan.”

 High-resolution photos are available here.

Each outline had an “evidence marker” noting how animals suffer and die in the meat, egg, and dairy industries: chickens’ and turkeys’ throats are cut while they’re still conscious, piglets’ tails are cut off without painkillers, and calves are torn away from their mothers within hours of birth.

“Each one of the billions of animals mutilated and killed for food every year is a sensitive individual who felt pain and fear, just as we do, and didn’t want to die,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA stands ready with free vegan starter kits to help everyone keep the body count from stacking up.

PETA’s free vegan starter kit is available here. Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year; reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer; and helps prevent future pandemics. SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 – which spread from a live-animal market – all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information or to order a free vegan starter kit, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram.
