Royal National Lifeboat Institution Wins PETA Award for Rescuing Drowning Cat

Great Yarmouth – The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is getting a Heroes to Animals Award from PETA after a dramatic rescue in which a crew from the RNLI’s Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Lifeboat Station plucked a drowning cat from the waters of the River Bure, towelled him off, brought him back to dry land, and took him to the veterinarian. The cat, Icicle, is now safe at home.

“This cat probably feared the worst as the waters swallowed him up, but luckily for him, the RNLI was there to save the day,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “The crew’s act of heroism is a ray of light that should inspire others to reach out and save an animal who needs help.”

PETA recommends keeping cats indoors, where they will be safe from the elements, cars, dogs, and unkind people and can’t prey on the local bird population.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow the group on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
