THERESA MAY RECEIVES 60TH BIRTHDAY GIFT: CHIC, VEGAN HEELS FROM PETA

Group Sends Cruelty-Free Footwear Fit for Prime Minister’s Wardrobe

London – On the heels of her 60th birthday, PETA has sent a glamourous gift to Prime Minister Theresa May: a pair of vintage-inspired vegan court shoes to add to her famously chic wardrobe. The classic pair by Beyond Skin comes in black faux suede with a stiletto heel and a delicate jewelled strap. PETA chose the gift to point out that cruelty-free materials are far kinder to animals and the environment and to encourage May to take steps to make Britain a more compassionate nation for animals.

“Fashion is about more than looking good – it’s also a statement about who you are and what you stand for”, says PETA UK Director Elisa Allen. “We hope the gift will inspire her to choose compassion over cruelty when it comes to policies that affect animals.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – notes that cows killed for leather endure castration, branding, tail-docking, and dehorning, without painkillers, before being skinned and dismembered alive. In addition, the leather industry has a terrible impact on the Earth, from the animals’ carbon emissions to the toxic tanneries that pollute nearby water supplies and expose workers to excessive amounts of chemicals, including arsenic.

Last year, the group presented the Duchess of Cambridge with a vegan wool coat for her birthday and encouraged her to send a strong message to British women that they can have top-notch style without hurting animals
