THOUSANDS OF BRITS PLEDGE TO GO VEGAN FOR LENT
More Than 2,000 Take PETA’s Pledge to Give Up Meat, Eggs, and Dairy Products
London – With the Lenten season upon us, PETA reports that more than 2,000 people across the UK have taken its “Go Vegan and Feel Great for Lent!” pledge. By doing so, anyone wanting to try out a plant-based diet for 40 days can receive daily recipes, tips on eating out, and more. The figure is nearly double that of last year, when 1,200 people took part.
“Not only is going vegan this Lent good for our health, it’s also the perfect way to show compassion and respect for all of creation”, says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “After 40 days, many people are so hooked on cruelty-free eating that they go vegan full-time and celebrate with a delicious plant-based Easter feast.”
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that there’s nothing loving or compassionate about today’s industrialised meat, egg, dairy, and fishing industries. In fact, Jesus would probably be appalled by them. Chickens’ and turkeys’ throats are often cut while they’re still conscious, fish are cut open while they’re still alive or suffocate on the decks of fishing boats, and calves are taken away from their mothers within hours of birth so that the milk nature intended for them can be consumed by humans instead.
The consumption of meat and other animal-derived foods has also been linked to an increased risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
