London – As Prince William and Duchess Catherine prepare for the birth of their first child, PETA hopes to provide the newborn with a royally warm welcome: a faux-sheepskin blanket. As the group explains in its card to the Duke and Duchess, the sheepskin blankets traditionally given to newborns in some parts of the UK are products of animal suffering – but faux sheepskin is just as soft and warm while being far kinder to animals. A photo of PETA’s gift is available here.

In addition, the Duke and Duchess will be able to celebrate the birth of their first child in style, as PETA is including a hamper containing vegan caviar and faux gras for the new parents. (Prince Charles has banned foie gras – made from the enlarged, diseased livers of force-fed ducks and geese – from Royal menus.)

“Using a cruelty-free baby blanket is a wonderful way to start a lifetime of compassion”, says PETA UK Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi. “We hope PETA’s gift to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will inspire other parents to set an example of kindness for their families by choosing compassionately created items for their children.”

Sheep used for their wool and skin can have their tails docked and be castrated without any pain relief. Because workers are often rushed, they shear the animals as quickly as possible, leaving them with anything from small cuts to deep gashes and even amputations of protruding body parts. When they’re no longer wanted, the sheep are shipped to slaughter, which usually involves herding them onto lorries and transporting them long distances.
