Your Co-op Travel Pulls Plug on SeaWorld Ticket sales

UK’s Largest Member-Owned Travel Agent Drops Captive-Cetacean Abusement Parks

London – Your Co-op Travel has joined a long list of companies – including British Airways Holidays, Virgin Holidays, STA Travel, Booking.com, and TripAdvisor – that have stopped promoting SeaWorld following discussions with PETA.

Your Co-op Travel has confirmed that its retail branches, website, and tour packages (Co-op Holidays), will stop selling tickets to SeaWorld – the world’s most notorious marine abusement park – and all other parks that confine highly intelligent cetaceans in the name of entertainment.

“Your Co-op Travel has officially rejected marine-mammal prisons like SeaWorld, where sensitive, complex, naturally far-ranging aquatic animals are kept in cramped tanks,” says PETA Director of Corporate Projects Yvonne Taylor. “No travel provider should profit from cruelty to animals, and PETA urges TUI – which is still giving a financial lifeline to SeaWorld – to follow   suit.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment” – notes that in nature, orcas form complex relationships, work cooperatively to find food, and traverse up to 140 miles of ocean every day. Those at SeaWorld are housed in incompatible groups in cramped tanks and have even been given the drug diazepam to manage stress-induced aggressive behaviour. More than 40 orcas and hundreds of other animals have died on SeaWorld’s watch – far short of their natural life expectancies.
