Kitten Cakes and Crabcakes: What’s the Difference?

Imagine walking hungry, then seeing a vendor offering “locally caught tabbies” and “kitten cakes” at two for a fiver. Behind the counter is a “kittenmonger” with a blood-spattered apron, holding a tray of what looks like feline fillets. The sign says: “Locally Sourced. Ethically Slaughtered. 100% Tabby.”

Shocked? Horrified? That’s exactly the point.

Crabs Feel Pain Too

Our latest action at the Lymington Seafood Festival questions moral compasses, comparing the animals we share our homes with and those we eat, asking: Why is one life worth more than another?

Crabs feel pain, fear, and form social bonds. They forage together, protect their mates, and defend their young. But in kitchens and slaughterhouses, they’re ripped apart alive, impaled, or boiled while fully conscious.

Imagine doing that to a kitten.

Speciesism: The Invisible Bias on Your Plate

Why do we cherish some animals and cook others alive? This is speciesism: the belief that some animals matter more than others. It’s why some humans cradle cats in their arms but crack open crabs.

But crabs and other marine animals cherish their lives just as cats and dogs do. If you wouldn’t eat a tabby, why eat a crab?

Compassion Is a Choice, And It’s Delicious

Every vegan saves around 200 animals from suffering every year. That means 200 lives are spared from being boiled, butchered, or broken.

Switching is now simpler than ever. With numerous tasty options, ranging from plant-based “fish” to cruelty-free comfort foods, you’ll find endless delicious choices. We also offer a free vegan starter kit to help you transition.

So next time you see a crab on a plate, ask yourself: Would I do this to a kitten?

If the answer is no, it’s time to change what’s on your fork.
