Victory! More Than 16,800 Voices Help Stop Blackpool Parrot Attraction
Blackpool councillors have unanimously refused planning permission for a proposed “parrot experience” that would have allowed visitors to interact with captive birds in an artificial indoor environment.
The decision follows significant public opposition, including a PETA petition signed by 16,811 supporters who urged the council to reject the plans.

Councillors Reject Cruel Attraction
The proposed attraction would have transformed a former commercial premises on Talbot Road into an indoor “jungle” where parrots would have been kept for interaction with visitors.
According to local reporting, councillors voiced concerns about animal welfare, the suitability of the town-centre location, and the message the attraction would send.
Perhaps the strongest criticism came from Councillor Pam Brookes, who compared the proposal to forms of animal exploitation that society has increasingly rejected.
“It seems to me that this smacks of a step-back in time to when we had tigers and elephants in circuses and a monkey in a blue suit,” she said. “We have moved on from this and it is just wrong – this would be detrimental to our brand of tourism.”
The committee subsequently voted unanimously to refuse the application.

Parrots Are Not Entertainment
Parrots are highly intelligent, sensitive animals who do not belong in attractions designed for entertainment.
In nature, they fly long distances, live in complex social groups, forage for food, and communicate constantly with their flocks. Captivity deprives them of opportunities to express many of these natural behaviours and can lead to stress, frustration, and psychological suffering.
The proposed attraction would have reduced these remarkable birds to novelty encounters, sending the harmful message that animals exist for our amusement. Animals are someone, not something. They are not props, performers, or selfie opportunities.

A Victory Made Possible by Compassion
More than 16,800 compassionate supporters signed our petition to oppose this exploitative proposal and stand up for parrots.
No animal deserves to be confined for entertainment. This victory shows what can happen when people come together to challenge the exploitation of animals and demand better for them.
