GRAPHIC: Zebra Beheaded and Fed to Tigers at Norway Zoo

Posted by 5 months ago | Permalink | Comments (97)

Visitors to Norway’s Kristiansand Dyrepark zoo were confronted with a macabre sight last week: the beheaded body of a zebra was left in an enclosure.

Beheaded-Zebra

According to NRK, the zebra’s body was left for tigers to tear apart and done so in public to “educate” visitors.

The scene has caused shocked people to post on social media, with many concerned about how seeing a headless zebra torn to pieces would affect children. The incident is reminiscent of what happened to Marius, the 18-month-old giraffe who was killed by the Copenhagen Zoo and fed to lions in 2014, causing outrage worldwide.

It’s common for zoos to kill healthy animals when they have too many. Between 3,000 and 5,000 healthy “surplus” animals are killed each year by European zoos alone. Breeding programmes serve no true conservation purpose because zebras and other animals born in zoos are rarely, if ever, returned to their natural habitats. They are often treated as mere baby-makers and visitor attractions in zoos’ “swap-and-shop” programmes, which give the public a false sense that something meaningful has happened.

Zebra-Wild

The argument that zoos are educational doesn’t cut it, either. Seeing bored, depressed and often insane animals pacing, swaying or circling constantly teaches children nothing about normal animal behaviour – we certainly wouldn’t take our children to a prison in order to teach them about human behaviour. They can learn far more valuable and inspiring lessons by watching nature documentaries that show wild animals where they belong, going on virtual field trips or watching IMAX movies that feature animals filmed in the wild.

PETA urges everyone who genuinely cares about zebras and all the other individuals serving life sentences in zoos to avoid patronising such “attractions” and instead donate to campaigns that actually protect animals in their native habitats.

I DREAD TO THINK JUST WHAT LIFE WILL BE LIKE ON EARTH IN SOME 50 YEARS TIME. JUST WHAT WILL BE LEFT OF ANIMAL LIFE.

My students have been studying about zoos. We discovered that some zoos try to keep animals from becoming extinct, but we realize that zoos are a big money making industry and should be closed. Animals need space to roam like God intended. Unfortunately, much of their natural habitat has been destroyed as well, which is an equally huge problem. There really are no easy answers here, but we must act now.

  • Devin commented on April 28, 2016 at 5:09 pm

This is horrible. I have only recently began to see the true horrors that zoos inflict on animals, and I can say I’m never going back. Perhaps some zoos are truly as animal friendly as possible, but we are still keeping animals in tiny enclosures. I feel that the same money could be put towards conservation programs through attendance at wild animal parks, where endangered species have more room to live.

Not Norway again! You would think they would have got the message by now that this is disgusting in the eyes of the world. They cannot manage animals if they have too many. This poor zebra should have been given alternative choices to be out to a safari park or a sanctuary, but BEHEADING it for the public to come and view it being ripped apart for food is beyond belief. you only have to watch wildlife programmes to see how lions and tigers get their food. You don’t go to a zoo to see a zebra being touted for ‘Education.’ This zoo should be closed for once and for all.

  • Julia Jones commented on April 29, 2016 at 1:21 am

I used to live in San Diego. The San Diego Zoo is highly acclaimed. I just didn’t really want to go, and I wasn’t sure why. I completely agree with PETA. They look bored, depressed and yes, I believe many were driven insane by captivity.

Close these barbaric zoos, circuses, and Seaworld. The San Diego Wild Animal Park might be slightly better than the rest. But I’ve been so brainwashed myself, I don’t know. This is why I support PETA so much. Education (by the right people) is invaluable.

  • Heidi Lohrfink commented on April 29, 2016 at 1:55 am

  • Lell commented on April 29, 2016 at 2:10 am

Presumably these animals eat meat every day, is it better then that it is indistinguishable meat, like the prepackaged stuff we buy in the supermarket? I understand that seeing a carcass of an animal is upsetting but every meal the carnivores eat means a death of something. Im very much against the keeping of any wild animal unless there is absolutely no choice, but they still need feeding.

    • Cynthia commented on May 1, 2016 at 9:37 pm

So, in other words, you find the death of the zebra justified? It is ethically and morally wrong. The so-called zoo is supposed to protect animals, but instead they are more interested in shock value and profitability (even at the cost of animals’ lives that they themselves are entrusted to protect). This is absolutely disgusting. The animals would have been fed like the normally are. The next step will be to allow animals to kill one another and have people pay to see it.. oh, wait, this is already happening in one Chinese zoo. Zoos are dirty, disgusting places. I’m speaking to their lack of ethics and common sense. The only educational thing children can learn is that animals belong in the wild and are not here for our entertainment.

      • Alexandra commented on May 6, 2016 at 6:24 pm

Where is the difference between a lion eating a zebra that has been killed by humans and a lion eating packaged meat from farm animals that have been killed by humans? Zoos are totally wrong, all of them should be closed. But do you really think a zebra`s life is worth more than, let`s say, a cow`s life?

      • Paul Stuart commented on August 28, 2016 at 3:12 am

It`s disgusting that they raise animals just to feed the other animals at the Zoo`s…Over populate to Zebra`s so they have enough food to feed the lions, tigers, etc…These places need to stop..What they do to Elephants,Orca`s,Dolphins,Lions,Tigers,Bears ETC. all over the World is totally DISGUSTING…To see what the Mahoot`s in the African jungles do to baby Elephants after being taken from their mother and then tied down for weeks and tortured with fire, screaming, poking, touching, would break anyone`s heart…

Absolutely we should close the zoos. I am so tired and sickened by abused and starving animals. The habitats they live in are not even large enough for these animals to live in. Hate to see any wild animal stressed because it’s not their natural habitat. To much human contact is a issue too! Want all animals freed from all humans , especially the animals that are used for human entertainment. Just one more thing? No one on this entire earth has the right to own a wild animal or use them for their own selfish greed. Done with all this bullshit in the world. This world needs laws to protect wild life and consequences that will take affect heavily if found with one!! Sad world we are showing are next generation that we don’t care about wild life.

    2. close the zoos if they cannot be any more humane than this… I would have been more than upset if my kid had witnessed something like this. It is one thing to hunt, but to needlessly kill is another.
    3. If you cannot maintain the animals at the zoo without this kind of garbage, then don’t run the zoo.
    4. Maybe it would be better to see them in their natural habitat and promote leaving the habitat for them without people in it..

  • Leo Cookson commented on April 30, 2016 at 7:15 am

The evidence suggests zoos are fun for viewers but not for animals. The animals come first. In this technologically driven world, children can learn about animals in museums and on-line. And adults can travel.

  • Valerie Wells commented on May 1, 2016 at 7:24 pm

I agree we should close zoos. They existed originally to allow people to be able to see ‘wild animals’, be educated in what exotic animals looked like long before television and open travel for everyone. Their purpose is spent. We have conservation parks which allows animals to live in wider areas, although I do not like ‘confined’ parks, but they do enable animals near extinction to breed safely. I would
Iike to see all creatures roaming in their natural environment but they are exposed to rich hunters and poachers to take advantage of them.

  • Kim Keister commented on May 2, 2016 at 9:09 pm

In the wild these animals “DO” eat Zebra. It should not matter how the lions get it and eat it. It’s nature and people need to realize if this did not happen these large cats will get a bag of Cat Chow and tin of kitty food!

So this is healthy and they are eating and not starving!

    • ALISON HANDLEY commented on May 6, 2016 at 5:15 pm

I agree. If these animals were living in the wild it would be a much harder life for them. Has no one watched wildlife programmes? In zoo’s at least they get fed regularly and what they should be eating for their digestion. Cat’s are the only true carnivore and need meat to get the correct enzymes which their bodies cannot make for themselves. I do agree that some zoo’s could be better looked after but the ones I have visited such as Longleat and Marwell are excellent and they really care for their animals.

    • Sharon N commented on May 9, 2016 at 9:39 pm

“In the wild these animals “DO” eat Zebra. It should not matter how the lions get it and eat it”.

So if you fell into a tiger enclosure and you got eaten, that’s ok as the tigers must get their food somehow.

While zoos had their uses before the advent of TV and movie documentaries, they are totally irrelevant today except as a means of earning revenue. When I was a child I thrilled at the prospect of a visit to the zoo. Alas! That is no longer true and I would consider a visit now both heartbreaking and disappointing. The day of the zoo is over. Let us be done with it.

  • Scott Turner commented on May 6, 2016 at 3:37 pm

Yes, zoos should be closed. I used to love looking at the animals when I was a child, but now I know that they’re nothing but holding tanks for animals. Think about, not all Zoo’s are so bad. We are lucky to have Zoo’s, then without a Zoo, no Bisons and maybe the Zoo is the only place where we can safe animals from Hunting.

The only reason why the visitors go in to a Zoo is, they have babyanimals and what will the Zoo do when the babyies are adults, they have to sell them to a another Zoo or kill them.

These innocent creatures should be left alone in their environment to live peacefully amongst themselves as nature intended. Humans are too greedy and cruel, so leave animals alone.

The animals are not ours or for our amusement & entertainment, how are you going to teach children to respect life of any kind if they watch this sort of thing? REMEMBER …after you have killed the last animal, chopped down the last tree and fished the last river you will find out that you cannot eat money. It is time to start getting a grip on what is happening around us and this start with dumb animals and the environment . ….NUFF SAID.

    2. What in the hell do you think big cats eat in the wild? A salad? Tofu? Do you suppose that they are breatharians?
    3. Seeing nature at the zoo is “harmful?” What in the hell do you expect to see? The Acid Bears dancing in some technocolor chorus line?
    4. Life sentence? Are you for real?
    5. Zoos are not educational? Really? I suppose that everyone’s mommy and daddy can afford to send their ‘lil shoogums to the African savannah on holiday?

more disgusting treatment of animals in a so called modern society. All zoos and circuses should be a thing of the past . The Human race seems to be going back to the old barbaric days instead of going forward into a better world, animals are important to our survival we should treat them with kindness and respect We have the ability but it seems not enough will.
