Hatfield Man Is Finalist in PETA’s ‘Most Beautiful Vegan Over 50’ Competition
Hatfield – To celebrate mature vegans who are making the world a kinder and safer place by keeping animal-derived foods off their plates, PETA has selected the eight finalists in its 2021 UK and Ireland’s Most Beautiful Vegan Over 50 Competition.
Steve Byrne, a 55-year-old bus driver from Hatfield, has beaten out numerous other entrants from across the UK to nab a spot on the list. Byrne has committed his life to defending animals by being vegan, helping local campaigners promote vegan living, and encouraging his friends to do the same.
“We were looking for special people who were willing to share their stories and inspire others to do what they can to save animals – and Steve Byrne fits the bill,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “Each finalist in PETA’s competition is an inspiration to anyone who wants to explore healthy, humane vegan living.”
The esteemed winner of the contest – a twist on PETA’s popular Hottest Vegan Competition – will receive a decadent vegan food hamper from Fortnum & Mason, including a bottle of the finest vegan prosecco.
This year’s winner will be chosen based on several factors, including vote count, and will be announced by 27 August. See the full contest details here.
In addition to each saving nearly 200 animals per year, vegans are less prone to suffering from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity than meat-eaters are and help prevent future epidemics and pandemics. COVID-19 originated in a “wet market”, where live and dead animals were sold for human consumption, and deadly outbreaks of swine flu, avian flu, SARS, HIV, foot-and-mouth disease, mad cow disease, and other diseases have stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.
