Italian Actress Rosita Celentano Joins PETA US in Calling On Prada to Ban Exotic Skins

Today, on the day of Prada Group’s annual meeting, actor and TV host Rosita Celentano teamed up with one of its shareholders, PETA US, to urge the brand to stop selling products made from the skins of exotic animals. In a video addressed to Prada’s head of corporate social responsibility, Lorenzo Bertelli – son of executive directors Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli and the heir to the company – Celentano calls for an end to this cruel trade.

“I believe fashion should be about creativity, not cruelty. That’s why I would never wear anything made of exotic skins. Numerous investigations by PETA entities have documented the grim reality of what Prada refers to as ‘precious skins’. … There is absolutely no such thing as ‘ethical’ or ‘humanely farmed’ exotic skins.”

Alligators and Ostriches Are Not Handbags

PETA entities have documented that in the exotic-skins industry, alligators’ necks are hacked open and metal rods are shoved into their heads in an attempt to scramble their brains and nails are driven into snakes’ heads while they’re still conscious.

A video exposé of the world’s largest ostrich-slaughter companies – including suppliers to Prada – revealed that young birds are kept on barren dirt feedlots before they’re crammed into lorries, transported to abattoirs, and electrically shocked before their throats are slit.

Take Action Today

Forward-thinking companies are meeting the growing demand for sustainable, animal-friendly products by offering vegan leather options made from pineapples, mushrooms, apples, cacti, and more. Brands such as Mulberry, Chanel, Victoria Beckham, Burberry, HUGO BOSS, Vivienne Westwood, and Calvin Klein are all free from exotic skins.
