Mike Tyson Goes Vegan

It should hardly come as a surprise that more and more people are choosing to adopt a vegan diet. Many are going vegan because of the violent slaughter of billions of animals every year for their flesh, the devastating impact that producing animal-derived products has on the environment, or the fact that vegans are slimmer and healthier than their carnivorous counterparts. But the news that notorious heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson has decided to ditch meat, eggs and dairy products still floored many of us. It’s not because he’s a macho boxer. Countless world-class athletes – from “Olympian of the Century” Carl Lewis to Britain’s top squash player, James Willstrop – know that a diet free of animal-derived products is the winning formula when it comes to sports. It’s just that, well … he’s Mike Tyson! He’s the boxer who infamously bit off part of an opponent’s ear during a fight.

The fact that Tyson has lost his taste for meat – both human and animal – should be applauded. Now let’s just hope that his compassion extends to all animals and that he heeds PETA US’ appeal to stop promoting pigeon racing. Thinking about going vegan – or know someone who is?
