Travel Company Drops Running of the Bulls From Itinerary After PETA Push
Hampshire travel company On Site Events has removed Spain’s annual San Fermín festival from its itinerary after hearing from PETA.
During the barbaric festival, animals are chased down local streets and later stabbed to death in the bullring. The ritualised killing of bulls doesn’t belong on anyone’s travel itinerary, so we’re delighted to see On Site Events take this progressive step.
The Sadistic Running of the Bulls Spectacle
Every year, dozens of bulls are terrorised as they’re chased by a mob down the streets of Pamplona. The confused, frightened animals are often injured from crashing into walls, falling, or colliding with each other during the bull run.
After the run, they’re forced to enter the bullring where they are taunted and stabbed repeatedly with a lance and several harpoon-like banderillas until they are weakened from blood loss. Once a bull is too injured to defend himself, the matador stabs the exhausted animal with a sword. His tail or ears may be cut off and kept as a grotesque trophy.
Travel Industry Deems Tormenting Bulls Unacceptable
ABTA, the leading trade association for the UK travel sector, lists bullfighting as “unacceptable” in its animal welfare guidelines.
On Site Events has joined the growing majority of travel companies – including The Travel Corporation, Club Med, and G Adventures – in stopping all promotion of bullfighting in recent years.
Torture, Not Tradition
More than 125 Spanish towns and cities have rejected the torment and butchering of bulls for entertainment, but in Pamplona, the atrocities continue.
