‘The Bullfighter Dies’: Exclusive Morrissey Song Hits Out at Cruel Sport Ahead of Pamplona

Posted by 1 year ago | Permalink | Comments (55)

El_bull-a-dorMorrissey has always used his music as a way to express his beliefs – and this week, he continues the trend, with the release of a stirring new song, “The Bullfighter Dies”, to coincide with the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.

In a sneak peak from a blog post written by the compassionate star, which will be posted in full later this month by PETA US, Morrissey says of bullfighting:

The contest is not equal, the animal is unable to protest or to walk away, and the bullfighter doesn’t even actually fight the bull at all! Whatever the results, whatever the motive, the bullfight is systematic torture, and the disgrace of it falls back on any society that allows it to continue.

He also explained the message of the song, which you can listen to here:

“The Bullfighter Dies” is a shout out for the total abolition of the living horror of bullfighting, and since those who control such barbarity have no interest in the welfare of the bull, then we can only approach the subject by stressing how the overwhelming majority do not have any sympathy when the bullfight does not go the bullfighters’ way. Why should we?

Moz is definitely not alone in being appalled by what happens in the bullring. This weekend, activists from all around the world will join PETA in Pamplona for an attention-grabbing protest against the barbaric San Fermín festival, in which bulls are chased through the streets by tourists before eventually being stabbed to death in the bullfighting arena. According to a recent survey, 76 per cent of Spanish people have no interest in bullfighting, and the dying industry is largely being propped up by tourists and huge EU subsidies.

Morrissey has a long and impressive history of speaking out for animals and has been joining forces with PETA and our international affiliates for more than 30 years. Later this month, he will be teaming up with PETA US to give fans the first listen of his much-anticipated 10th album, World Peace Is None of Your Business! Visit PETA.org on 15 July to tune in to the exclusive live stream.

  • susan chester commented on July 3, 2014 at 11:35 am

I have never, and never will agree that bullfighting is a sport. Take away the matadors spears and swords and then see who wins. This is a barbaric practice that needs to be stopped NOW.

  • Ericha Johansson commented on July 3, 2014 at 11:46 am

Put a permanent ban on running of the bulls and bullfights. It’s abuse if the worst sort, and any society and nation that allows this to continue is a disgrace.

  • Pamela Geier commented on July 3, 2014 at 11:50 am

Stabbing bulls to death slowly and systematically is wrong. You are a putrid, rancid, disgusting and tasteful people that do this. Torturing animals of ANY kind is wrong. Have you not learned this rule yet? This medieval thought pattern has run its course and it is time to more forward in the world. Stop this at once.

  • nina commented on July 3, 2014 at 12:50 pm

This is not a sport, it is disgusting and needs to be banned NOW

  • Vicky commented on July 3, 2014 at 2:33 pm

Morrisey ( live on stage at Glastonbury a couple of years ago while I was watching him) also compared the killing of the teenagers in norway to killing chickens.
I’m all for animal rights but you certainly can’t compare the brutal murder of children to farming chickens for meat. He needs a reality check!

  • Julia Wilkinson commented on July 3, 2014 at 2:34 pm

Glorified torture ,,disgusting that these countries still…..,,,,,, allow it to happen !!!!!!!

  • Anita Bott commented on July 3, 2014 at 3:04 pm

Torturing animals is a crime. I cannot understand that people go there to see how the bulls are killed. They are living beings. It is so cruel..
Bocott Pamplona, boycott Spain. I do.

  • Goga commented on July 3, 2014 at 3:46 pm

  • Shivani commented on July 3, 2014 at 4:13 pm

I wish that the picture shown above in this article actually comes true. I feel God must be regretting that he created the human race.

Spain and their people could not develop their barbaric minds with the change and modernisation of the human race.

  • Lucinda Joesbury commented on July 3, 2014 at 4:17 pm

There really is no reason for this discusting ‘tradition’. So much unnecessary cruelty in this so called ‘sport’. Once again Morrissey is spot on. Morrissey for prime minister!!!

  • Ramasamy monica commented on July 3, 2014 at 4:18 pm

  • Jo Wallace commented on July 3, 2014 at 5:50 pm

This is not a sport: it’s barbaric and needs to stop now!! How can humans (I use the term loosely) even consider doing this to a living animal. How would they feel if they took the place of the Bull.

  • Diana Tracey commented on July 3, 2014 at 5:56 pm

This cruel sport needs to stop now!!! It is not a sport. It’s downright cruelty and makes decent people ashamed!

  • Alix Freeman commented on July 3, 2014 at 6:20 pm

Barbaric …how do the Spanish people allow this to continue..how can Europe give 3 million pounds a year to support this barbaric act..
We have children dying of starvation in the third world …perhaps this money would be better used to feed these children instead of supporting murder

  • veronica palmer commented on July 3, 2014 at 6:47 pm

Bull fighting needs to be stopped. It’s not a fight just cruel people making money out of it.Alot of Spanish would like it banned i’ve heard, it’s the tourists carrying it on.

  • nature's son commented on July 3, 2014 at 6:48 pm

As usual, Morrissey breaks it down. Parenthetically, I love that video on YouTube of the deer standing up to the bubba with the rifle, delivering with his front hooves an animal kingdom beat down to the cowardly hunter. Majestic. As for bull’fighting’, phallocentrism at its worst.

  • Marc Capella commented on July 3, 2014 at 6:48 pm

I sent emails to trough to you to warn that in Barcelona and Catalonia Bullfights are forbidden. Pitty when time after Morrissey released that song and include Barcelona in the song.

  • Rosy Reyes commented on July 3, 2014 at 7:04 pm

Absolutely agree, coming from a family background of bullfighting but this is not a sport! It’s evil, disgusting & beyond cruel!

  • Eleanor Grace commented on July 3, 2014 at 8:17 pm

This practice is disgusting and countless people waste their money on this worthless and cruel ‘entertainment’

  • Janet thomas commented on July 3, 2014 at 9:39 pm

For years I have hoped and prayed that this disgusting activity stops for good
Shame on a country that allows this sort of thing to go on. Never been to Spain
And never will go there as long as this brutality continues.

  • Alan Wilkinson commented on July 3, 2014 at 10:59 pm

Boycott the country until this cowardly, outdated, & sickening so called bullfighting when it’s just slow murder of a magnificent animal. so sad.

  • S Hazelton commented on July 3, 2014 at 11:07 pm

I guess the Spanish ego is worried Spain will lose its identity if Bullfighting was stopped, but I think they would get a lot of respect if the made this mindless cruel act a thing of their past and finally banned it. Is there a petition or something? Love to all x

  • Jacqui Warham commented on July 4, 2014 at 12:59 am

Disgusting barbaric medieval ‘tradition’ that has no place in the 21st century!!

  • Emma commented on July 4, 2014 at 2:06 am

Disgraceful….how can this be allowed to continue. Absolutely barbaric!

  • PARIMAL commented on July 4, 2014 at 7:30 am

BULLFIGHT IS A MISNOMER. IT IS NOT A FIGHT AT ALL IT IS A SADISTIC PLEASURE SPANISH PEOPLE DERIVE BY PIERCING DARTS AND LEAVE THEM BLEEDING HELPLESSLY AND TORTURING THEM AND ULTIMATELY LEFT TO DIE HELPLESSLY AND THE CRUELEST MANNER. STOP THIS NONSENSE MONSTROUS SPORT WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT. THIS IS TARNISHING VERY IMAGE OF SPANISH PEOPLE. • PARIMAL commented on July 4, 2014 at 7:31 am

IS SPANISH PEOPLE CONSIDER THE REST OF WORLD FOOL BY CALLING IT A BULL FIGHT WHERE IN BULL HAS NO ROOM TO PROTECT ITSELF ?

  • PARIMAL commented on July 4, 2014 at 7:33 am

STOP THIS SATANIC SPORT SPORT WHICH LEAVES HELPLESS BULL IN DYING CONDITIONS ARE GETTING SEVERELY WOUNDED.

  • Sam Outhorn commented on July 4, 2014 at 1:45 pm

Spain is a EU member and ought to realise that – according to existing/upcoming EU laws in the field, as well as green lobbies within – this sadistic macho display of the past is doomed to fail. – And so are more cruel ‘traditions’, hunting included.

  • Aart van Kruiselbergen commented on July 13, 2014 at 5:06 pm

Great to know that Morrissey has recorded this song. Hope it will be a huge success. We cry for the bulls that are tortured to death by these cowards. Hope there will be a Spanish version of this song as well as so many Spanish people do not approve of this antiquated animal abuse.
Shame on Mr Rajoy for promoting this disgusting spectacle. This is not the Fiesta Nacional, but La Verguenza Nacional (The National Shame)
