Emmett J Scanlan on Speciesism and Going Vegan: ‘We Are All Animals’

As Veganuary continues, actor Emmett J Scanlan wants to remind everyone that we are all animals who share this planet and that we all deserve to be treated with respect.

That’s the message behind his new ad campaign for PETA – shot by celebrity photographer Tony Craig – in which the Butterfly, Krypton, and Peaky Blinders star encourages people to “live vegan” in order to combat speciesism.

The actor also sat down for an exclusive video interview with PETA, in which he discusses his journey towards vegan living.

He describes what eating vegan means to him:

“I’m convinced that if we eat meat, we’re ingesting bad karma, but as a by-product of that, by not eating meat, I’m helping the environment. It’s healthier for me. I know, I believe, I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt before …. More importantly than anything, I feel happy that I’m on this path.”

Emmett joins a long list of celebrities – including Alicia Silverstone, Eva Mendes, Penélope Cruz, Tom Hardy, Gillian Anderson, Alan Cumming, Joaquin Phoenix, and many others – who have teamed up with PETA or our affiliates to help end the exploitation of animals.

Why Vegan?

All animals reared for food are exploited and abused. Females are repeatedly forcibly impregnated. Babies are torn away from their mothers, mutilated, kept in filthy and severely crowded conditions, and fed a cocktail of drugs, sometimes causing their bodies to become oversized, resulting in numerous health problems. Then, often when they’re only a few months old, they endure a stressful and terrifying trip to the abattoir, where many are killed while still conscious.

With so many delicious and healthy plant-based options available, going vegan is now easier than ever. Order our free vegan starter kit to get more tips from PETA on eating vegan and to show that you’re serious about ending animal exploitation and taking a stand against speciesism.
