No Joke: Joaquin Phoenix Is a Hero to Animals

Just ahead of his much-anticipated star turn in Joker, Joaquin Phoenix appears on a new PETA US billboard in Times Square, New York.

In the ad, the award-winning actor highlights that we’re all animals deserving of respect and encourages everyone to live vegan and help end speciesism.

He explains why he felt compelled to speak out for animals:

When we look at the world through another animal’s eyes, we have to realise that, inside, we’re all the same – and so we all deserve to live free from suffering.

End Speciesism

Speciesism is a human-supremacist line of thinking that’s used to defend treating other living, feeling beings like research tools, food ingredients, fabric, or even toys – even though they have as much interest in freedom and staying alive as humans do.

All animals can feel pain, pleasure, fear, frustration, loneliness, and familial love, whether they have feathers or fins, two legs or four. Our prejudice alone allows us to treat some like members of the family while subjecting others to unimaginable suffering.

Cruelty to Animals Is Rampant

The meatfishingegg, and dairy industries are a nightmare for animals, who are treated like a collection of body parts rather than the sentient individuals they are.

All animals reared for food suffer. Females are repeatedly forcibly impregnated, and their babies are torn away from them to be mutilated and kept in filthy and severely crowded conditions. Then, often when they’re only a few months old, they endure a stressful and terrifying trip to the abattoir, where many are killed while still conscious – which would be a crime if a cat or dog were the victim.
