Years after being kicked out of the Guides, Gail Porter is extending an olive branch to the organisation, penning a PETA-supported plea for it to adopt a vegan interest badge. The television personality suggests the badge could be awarded to members who show kindness to animals by cooking animal-free meals or eating vegan for a month.

“Young people are our best hope for a better future, and they know that our individual actions can have a profound impact. … Your mission is about making a difference together – so what do you say? Shall we put our differences aside and do just that?”

Why a Vegan Badge?

As the world faces an alarming climate catastrophe, studies show that ditching meat, eggs, and dairy is the best way to help the planet. Researchers at the University of Oxford agree, citing vegan eating as the “single biggest way” to reduce humans’ environmental impact – and young people are driving the plant-based revolution. In her letter, Porter notes that over 50% of children “either already consider themselves vegan or vegetarian or would like to be”.

Every person who goes vegan saves up to 200 animals per year from a life of crowding, deprivation, poor health, and misery on factory farms and a terrifying death at the abattoir, where animals’ throats are sometimes cut when they are still conscious.
