‘Grim Reapers’ Haunt Bernard Matthews Meat Plant on Halloween

On Halloween, two “Grim Reapers” holding tombstone-shaped signs with the message “Slaughterhouses Kill Animals and Workers” led a protest outside Bernard Matthews’ Holton meat plant.

In keeping the facility open despite a COVID-19 outbreak – in which 75 employees have now tested positive – the company is showing workers and animals no mercy.

Filthy blood- and offal-soaked slaughterhouses are breeding grounds for diseases that can jump from animals to humans. As COVID-19 spreads like wildfire from worker to worker, we’re calling for Bernard Matthews to shut down the facility and keep it closed, protecting the lives of humans and other animals.

Eating Meat Harms Us All

It’s time we all made the connection between eating animals and major disease outbreaks around the world:

  • The novel coronavirus originated in a Chinese “wet market”, where live and dead animals were sold for human consumption.
  • Swine flu began on a factory farm.
  • Other influenza viruses have been traced to chicken farms.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that approximately 75% of recently emerged infectious diseases affecting humans originated in other animals.
