Congratulations to Alice Lambert-Gorwyn, the winner of our design-a-shoe competition with ethical footwear company Beyond Skin.

Alice’s glamorous design was chosen by our celebrity judge, Laura Whitmore, from a shortlist of carefully thought-out entries. Laura described the proposed shoe as “slick and sophisticated”.

Alice, a fourth-year fashion design student at the University of Leeds, is delighted to be starting off her career on a cruelty-free footing. “I am extremely passionate about animal welfare”, she told us. “I am a vegetarian and have recently made the decision to stop buying leather. … [T]his competition seemed like a great stepping stone, and a fantastic platform to raise awareness of such an important issue.”

Alice’s design will be going into production for Beyond Skin’s spring 2014 line, so you’ll be able to get your hands on a pair soon! Thank you to everyone else who entered the competition – short-listing the finalists from so many great designs was a tough call. And if you’re not already aware of the intense suffering endured by cows whose skin is turned into leather, please take a moment to watch Stella McCartney’s eye-opening exposé:
