Top 5 PETA Victories for Animals in 2018

2018 was a landmark year for PETA. Watch this video to see some of the action we’ve taken for animals in the past 12 months:

And here’s just a selection of the many victories we’ve achieved throughout the year (in no particular order, as they’re all so tremendous):

  1. More than 320 brands commit to banning mohair.

Following the release of a PETA Asia investigation showing that workers on mohair farms in South Africa violently dragged goats, left them cut and bleeding, and slit their throats while they were still conscious, over 320 retailers – including ASOS, Gap, Mango, H&M, Marks & Spencer, and Zara – committed to banning this cruelly obtained material from future collections.

  2. Thomas Cook pledges to stop selling tickets to SeaWorld.

After months of determined campaigning that included over 150 protests by our wonderful supporters around the UK, tens of thousands of letters from compassionate members of the public – including Sharon Osbourne, Paul O’Grady, and Jean-Michel Cousteau – and multiple meetings between PETA representatives and Thomas Cook management, the travel giant pledged to stop supporting orca abuse [link] by cutting ties with SeaWorld from summer 2019.

  3. Thousands of pigs and chickens are protected from exploitation.

Plans for cruel factory farms in New Brancepeth, Rufforth, and Rugby were all overturned, thanks to PETA petitions with over 55,000 signatures in total. These actions helped prevent up to 6,250 pigs and 144,000 chickens at a time from being exploited and eventually slaughtered.

  4. Hundreds of animals are spared suffering in laboratories.

PETA scientists – including Dr Julia Baines, PETA’s science policy adviser and a PETA International Science Consortium representative – helped overturn an animal testing requirement, preventing hundreds of pregnant rats or rabbits and their unborn offspring from being poisoned and killed.

  5. Luxury labels ban fur.

After decades of campaigning by PETA and our international affiliates, in 2018, many fashion houses – including Burberry, Chanel, and Michael Kors – recognised that fur is as dead as the poor animals it was stolen from and finally dropped it.

Every one of these victories occurred because caring, determined people refused to look away, give up, or stay silent while animals suffered. Until every cage is empty, every chain is broken, and every animal is treated with respect, PETA will not stop. Will you join us?
