Why Did This Block of Tofu Dance Outside London’s Borough Market?
As non-essential businesses and markets start to reopen throughout England, a PETA supporter dressed as a block of tofu was spotted dancing outside London’s Borough Market.
The “block of tofu” urged marketgoers to spare animals, protect the planet, and help prevent the emergence of animal-borne pathogens by eating vegan. The majority of the world’s new or emerging infectious diseases come from farming, exploiting, and consuming animals. We can protect ourselves against future pandemics – and be kind to animals – by switching to nutritious vegan foods like tofu.
Tofu Never Caused a Pandemic
Not only is tofu cheaper than meat, it also is more versatile, is packed with protein, and contains zero cholesterol, and eating it, rather than animal flesh, can lower one’s risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other life-threatening health issues. Just try these recipes and see for yourself how versatile and delicious tofu can be:
Coronavirus and Meat
Public health experts believe COVID-19 originated in a “wet market” in China, where traders sold both live and dead animals for human consumption. The COVID-19 pandemic is similar to the outbreaks of SARS and MERS: all three spread to humans from other animals.
We can’t ignore the link between eating animals and outbreaks of diseases like COVID-19. The insatiable human demand for meat, eggs, and dairy means that huge numbers of animals are reared in intensive confinement on giant, filthy farms.
Chickens, cows, pigs, and other animals are crammed together in cramped cages or faeces-ridden sheds. They’re transported in filthy lorries and slaughtered on killing floors soaked with blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. Pathogens flourish in such conditions. Crowded farms are a breeding ground for new strains of dangerous bacteria and viruses.
