Share the World is a free educational programme specifically designed for English, Science and PSHE Key Stages 1 & 2. Through the pack, video and poster-linked activities your pupils will be encouraged to develop respect and compassion for all living beings.

Dear Teacher

We live in a world that is full of the beauty of nature. Animals are the part of that natural world that we feel most akin to. Yet, throughout history, people have often treated animals more like things than living, breathing, feeling beings. But thanks to naturalists like David Attenborough and Dr Jane Goodall, we are recognising that animals are far more complex than we once believed – and capable of experiencing anxiety, suffering, fear and joy.

For today’s young people, developing empathy towards animals can be a key step towards developing empathy for, and rejecting violence against, all beings, including human beings. It is important, therefore, that pupils learn to recognise that the animals with whom we share this planet, are, in many ways, not so different from ourselves.

Share the World is a free educational programme designed to help your students better understand and appreciate the animal kingdom. Your pupils will use their thinking, reading and writing skills to work through the reproducible activities that form the heart of this programme.

Written specifically with the National Curriculum in mind, this pack promotes a richer understanding of the animals in our world and will instill in your pupils a sense of how we can treat them as fellow beings, with compassion and respect.

We know that other teachers in your school will want to make use of this pack and, although these materials are copyrighted, we encourage you to share it with them. If they would prefer a copy of their own, they can contact us directly at [email protected].

Programme Objectives
• To enhance the pupils’ understanding that animals are living, feeling beings to be treated with respect and compassion.
• To assist pupils in recognising that animals often experience the same needs and feelings as we do.
• To encourage pupils to see humans and animals in context with the natural world and to explore this theme.
• To help pupils understand how humans’ regard for animals has changed and developed as our knowledge of animals has increased.

Programme Components
1. A 24-page resource book with reproducible activities, assembly ideas and lesson plans for using the poster and video effectively. Curriculum links are shown.
2. A 30-minute video, split into five sections, to be used in conjunction with pages 20-21 of the resource book.
3. An A1 full-colour poster to be displayed in the classroom. Linked activities can be found on pages 22-23 of the resource book.
